December is a month of celebration and recognition. We spend time with our friends and families but during this time of celebration, we must also recognize that December is also AIDS Awareness Month. HIV/AIDS is a very real virus living among us right here in Atlanta.
For a brief overview; HIV stands for 'human immunodeficiency virus'. HIV is a retrovirus that infects cells of the human immune system and destroys their function. Infection with this virus results in the progressive depletion of the immune system. The immune system is considered deficient when it can no longer fulfill its role of fighting off infection and diseases. As a result people with the virus are much more vulnerable to a wide range of infections, most of which are very rare among people without immune deficiency. Diseases can take advantage of a weakened immune system and prove to be fatal to an infected person. AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome), caused by HIV, is spread by sexual contact with infected persons and needle sharing. Infected women can transmit the virus to their newborns before, during, or after birth.
The good news is this is a virus that is 100 percent preventable. Practicing abstinence, consistent and correct use of condoms, and sterilizing needles are all preventive methods.
Finally, let's dispel a few myths surrounding this virus:
drinking from the same glass as some infected with HIV/AIDS etc.)
if unprotected sexual intercourse occurs.
