The Secret Lives of Bees

The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd, is a moving story that depicts the angst of adolescence mired in a life of misfortune. In Sylvan, South Carolina during 1964, a 14-year-old Lily Owens sets off on the run with her fugitive nanny, Rosaleen, who'd been arrested for scuffling with some white men on her way to register to vote.

Lily orchestrates the escape as much for herself than the nanny, since Lily has nothing but an abusive father and memories of a dead mother tormenting her at home. Driven by her mother's picture of a Black Madonna, Lily finds August Boatwright, a bee keeper who revels in honey making and the way a little sweetness improves almost every condition.

This unforgettable coming-of-age story hits the big screen October 17.
