Lifestyle: Wine Tasting Corner

Here's a Toast

When dining out, the number one question is what wine should I choose? Pairing wine with a meal is not as difficult as it may seem.  Wines are often chosen to bring out the favor in whatever dish you choose.  You can start by deciding which wines you enjoy most.

Let us briefly explore red wines. This category includes a variety of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chianti, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and more. Generally upon examination, through smell, you can detect aromas of cherry, oak, blackberry, smoke or fig, depending on the wine. Red wines are often classified by style, that is, light, medium or heavy bodied wines referring to the mouth- feel.

White wines are somewhat different than their red counter-parts. Varietals of white wines include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Gris/Grigio. By smell, you will recognize aromas of citrus, melon, apple, oak, butter, etc. When examining white wines you will find them to be much more refreshing and crisp. This makes them extremely popular in the spring and summer.

Tips:

-When buying or ordering a bottle closely examine the label noting the brand, year, and region of origin of the wine. You'll learn this has an affect on taste. Familiarize yourself with the region and brand of your favorite wines.

-Before tasting, gently move your filled glass in a circular motion and smell. This motion will assist in releasing the wine's aromas.  You can also spot tannins which identify the style of the wine.

-Lastly, indulge in a small taste. Here you will get the full affect of your wine. You will also be able to taste freshness and what type of barrel your wine was aged in, oak or steel (this can sometimes be identified through smell)

Traditionally, red wines complement red meats and heavy sauces well; while white wines are generally paired with fish, chicken, or light dishes. This combination will never fail you.  However, I say, be adventurous and enjoy whatever wine you like best! There is never anything wrong with that!

Happy Drinking!
