Lifestyle: 60 Seconds of Style

Working the Runway of Work

Everyday city streets are overcrowded with the diligent stewards of corporate America, and between the 7 am wake up call, the daily stop at Starbucks, the boardroom meetings, and conference calls, the faithful workaholics rarely get a chance to peek in the mirror at their "howdidigetthisway" unstylish duds.  Different rules apply to different office atmospheres but almost everyone can agree that your ultimate goal in dressing for the workplace is to project a professional, competent image always follow this one rule of thumb; your confidence in your attire carries your look!  If your company appears to have no defined dress code, it's likely the best bet to simply think about what your boss wears and apply that dress code to your daily 9-5 code of style.

If she's sporting mostly skirt suits, you are likely in a pretty conservative workplace and not allowed to have too much fun with attire but you can definitely turn it up a notch by adding essential pieces.  Of course your closet is filled with your safe colors; navy, black and gray (ALL tailored, I hope!) but don't be afraid to switch it up a little by throwing an occasional red, brown, high-waist pencil skirt or hounds tooth pattern in there, creating a little winter spice!  Depending on the variety of suits you have, also look at your mix and match options.  If you have a black skirt suit and a gray jacket, be bold and match the gray skirt with the black suit jacket, crisp white shirt with maybe a ruffle or two and some priceless pearls and you will be the talk of the water cooler!!

If your boss is a slacks and shirt type of gal, then the fun has just begun! With this laid back atmosphere occasionally known as business casual, you can truly experiment with matching current trends with traditional pieces and your wardrobe can easily flow from office wear to after work happy hour.  This season is adorned with adorable dresses in all colors and thrown on with a good pair of tights and a sickening wedge, this simple look can likely work for you!  Don't get too "loosey goosey" though, remember this is still work, so another option might be a pair of slim fit trousers with an awesome oversize top- these items can be found in nearly every store you walk in.

Gentlemen, I think it's safe to say if you simply follow the rules of Les Minion, the President of Hugo Boss, you will be in the gossip email trail of every available woman in the office!  Minion points out "the clean lines of new suits look best without a cuff," simply put- cuffs are blatently dated 2003!  "I almost always wear a charcoal sock.  It works well with almost every color of suit," laymen's terms:  the socks should match the pant!  Make friends with the best tailor in town, there is nothing more striking than a man in a heaven-sent tailored suit!

My dear readers, it all boils down to the goals you are trying to achieve.  Whether you're trying to win over a stubborn client, impress your colleagues, or command attention at an important presentation, the key is to choose clothes that make you feel comfortable and allow you to exude an air of confidence. Feeling confident as well as looking confident all come together to create a complete cohesive, you!
